Living in Abundance, Seeking Happiness

In a society blessed with abundance, one might assume we’re the happiest people. However, the reality is quite the opposite. The happiest individuals are often those who own less than the average person. It’s a subtle reminder that material possessions don’t guarantee happiness in the long run. Let’s strive to join the ranks of the truly happy by embracing a minimalist mindset.

A laughing woman is standing on the middle of the streets of New York while her dog lies right on that street, ready to be served the water, she is holding in her hand.

Welcome to step one of the upside plan – Material Declutter!

I’m here to guide you through freeing yourself from possessions that not only fail to add value but become burdens. You might not realize it now, but the relief you’ll feel upon letting go will be enormous. Each of you is likely at a different stage of this journey, and that’s perfectly okay. Whether you’re drowning in belongings or consciously monitoring what enters your life, this guidance aims to cater to your unique situation.

Why Decluttering Matters:

Let me share why I believe decluttering makes a significant difference:

1. Everything is a Resource
Possessions are resources, and if unused, they can be shared with others who cherish it, reducing the need for new purchases and lessening the strain on natural resources. A true win-win-win situation!

2. Space is Freedom
Possessions occupy physical and mental space. Parting with them not only clears physical room but also sparks mental energy and creativity.

3. Simplicity Reduces Stress
The more we own, the more decisions and maintenance are required. Simplifying life reduces unnecessary complexities and keeps you focused on what truly matters.

4. Emotional Processing
Some possessions carry stories or emotional weight. Decluttering is not just about the present; it’s a journey of processing the past and making room for the future.

4 Reasons to Declutter!

Getting Started – Category by Category

But how can someone ideally start? I mean there is no right, no wrong, no perfect way.  The most important is to get started! Starting might seem daunting, but it’s crucial. Categorize your belongings—clothes, kitchen supplies, paperwork, and more. Focus on one category at a time, gathering everything within that category. This meticulous process ensures nothing is overlooked.

Setting Deadlines and Goals

Hold yourself accountable with deadlines—realistic but prioritized. Over time, the process becomes enjoyable, but staying on track in the beginning is key. Motivate yourself with before-and-after photos, and set goals that resonate with your comfort level.

Additional Tips along the Journey:

1. Mindful Purchases
While decluttering, try to buy only what’s necessary, and focus more on letting go.

2. Divide and Conquer
This might be common sense, but please, divide the things you want to part with into trash (if broken or ruined), donation, and selling. This will help you to be more sustainable and reduce strains on natural resources. You would be surprised how much can be reused, upcycled, or properly recycled to become part of the circular economy. How to continue from there I will explain in my post ‘Post-Decluttering: What’s Next for a Better Life? ‘.
